Ferrari had a two-time champion at the helm and a hungry wingman to match. McLaren had the reigning champions from the past two years in what was dubbed a “super team.” Brawn GP was bought by Mercedes-Benz , which then brought the most successful driver in F1 history out of retirement.

Europe’s largest auto group already encompasses Lamborghini , Bugatti and Bentley , is in the process of absorbing Porsche , and makes a couple more six-figure sports cars with Audi badges.

Plans for a Fiat-badged crossover based on a Chrysler-sourced platform have been confirmed for some time, but exactly what underpinnings would be used was open to speculation.
